A Force For Good was built around a simple idea: rings could be more comfortable, more capable and better suited to real life.

A wedding ring is supposed to be the one thing you never take off. And yet traditional metal rings give us reasons to take them off all the time. They’re rigid. They don’t move as our bodies change. They can become uncomfortable when our fingers swell. They shouldn’t be worn around heavy machinery or during activities where a ring can catch. And because a wedding ring may also be one of the most valuable and sentimental things you own, there’s always the question of whether this is the moment you might scratch it, damage it or lose it.

A workout. A surf session. A run. A day working with your hands. A flight. A weekend outdoors. Should I leave my ring on, or should I take it off? I found myself asking that question far too often. And every time I took my wedding ring off, a second problem appeared: Where do I put it? In my pocket? My gym bag? A hotel safe? The center console? Somewhere I’ll hopefully remember later?

I was tired of having to think about my ring. I wanted one ring I could put on and simply live in.

Then one flight made the problem impossible for me to ignore.

My hand began to swell. At first, I noticed I could no longer rotate my wedding ring around my finger. I tried to take it off and couldn’t. As my hand continued to swell, the ring became tighter. What started as an inconvenience became uncomfortable, then genuinely painful. I remember thinking how ridiculous it was that something meant to symbolize one of the most important things in my life could suddenly become something I desperately wanted off my hand.

Around the same time, my wife was experiencing the same problem from an entirely different perspective. She was pregnant, and as her body changed, so did her hands. Eventually her metal wedding ring simply wasn’t comfortable to wear, but she still wanted something that represented our marriage. Then our son was born, and there was another consideration. She was constantly holding, feeding, changing and comforting a newborn. A hard metal ring, especially an expensive diamond ring, wasn’t always something she wanted against his delicate skin or exposed to everything that comes with being a new mom.

Different circumstances. Same realization.

Our lives change. Our bodies change. The things we do change. A rigid metal ring doesn’t. A couple of weeks after that flight, I began designing what would become Live Ring. I didn’t want to make another cheap silicone band that you throw on for the gym and replace with your “real” ring afterward. I wanted to rethink the everyday ring itself.

Most importantly, I wanted to eliminate the constant mental checklist: Should I take my ring off? Could I damage it? Could I lose it? Is it safe to wear doing this? Where am I going to put it if I take it off?

That became the idea behind Live Ring.

Surf trips to Maui. Meetings in NYC. Camping in Yosemite. Running before sunrise. Lifting at the gym. Working with your hands. Traveling across the country. Chasing your kids around the backyard, or even playing in an NFL game. Live Ring was designed to go wherever life takes you.
